City of Newport Beach Secures $1,600,000
Congratulations to the City of Newport Beach for successfully securing $1,600,000 in the Fiscal Year 2023-2024 State Budget for the City’s Newport Bay Trash Interceptor project.
On Friday, TPA Vice President Cori Takkinen attended an event celebrating the groundbreaking of the project, which will enable the construction of a sustainably powered system that will capture a significant amount of floating trash and debris from the San Diego Creek before it enters Upper Newport Bay. This project is expected to reduce the amount of debris reaching Upper Newport Bay by 80 percent and will significantly improve the health of the environment and communities surrounding the Bay.
TPA worked alongside the City, Senator Dave Min, and Assemblymember Diane Dixon to secure the final $1,600,000 needed to complete this $5,500,000 project.
In addition, the project benefitted from several partners including Supervisor Katrina Foley, Orange County Transportation Authority, Orange County Flood Control District, Help Your Harbor, Surfrider Foundation, and the California Ocean Protection Council. This collaborative effort will protect and promote the safety and well-being of numerous communities throughout Orange County.
This latest achievement is another example of the commitment of the leadership of the City to preserve and enhance its unique coastal environment and foster high quality of life. Thank you, Senator Min, and Assembly Member Dixon, and congratulations, Newport Beach!
